Idaho Springs sits in Clear Creek Canyon along I-70, about 45 minutes west of downtown Denver. The U.S. Geological Survey lists the town at 7,526 feet. It is the closest of the I-70 mountain towns to the metro, and you reach it without going through the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel or over a high pass. That makes it a good first mountain trip for someone new to driving an RV.
Town itself is a small grid of historic streets between the creek and the interstate. Most RV travelers camp up Highway 103 in the Arapaho National Forest and drive down for mine tours, a soak and dinner.
Why Idaho Springs works for a short RV trip
The appeal is distance. A Friday afternoon pickup in the Denver area can still put you at a mountain campsite before dark, and the drive home on Sunday is short. You get real elevation and cool nights without committing to a long day behind the wheel.
The town also sits at the bottom of Highway 103, the route toward Echo Lake and Mount Blue Sky. That road gives you two Forest Service campgrounds within reach of town, plus one of the best known scenic drives on the Front Range.
Forest Service campgrounds up Highway 103
Both campgrounds below are in the Clear Creek Ranger District of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, and both are reserved through Recreation.gov. Neither has electric, water or sewer hookups, so plan to arrive with full fresh water and empty tanks. Both Forest Service pages showed the campgrounds as closed in late October 2026, so check the current status before you plan a trip.
| Campground | Elevation | Access | Listed parking spur length | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Echo Lake Campground | 10,600 feet | About 14 miles south of exit 240 on Highway 103, then a short turn onto Highway 5 | 20 to 55 feet; ten of the sites are listed as suitable for RVs | Larger rigs that need paved access, and early starts for Mount Blue Sky |
| West Chicago Creek Campground | 9,600 feet | About 6.5 miles up Highway 103, then about 3 miles on Forest Service Road 188; the last mile is one-lane gravel with two sharp switchbacks | 30 to 45 feet | Smaller RVs and confident drivers who want a quieter creekside site |
At West Chicago Creek, Recreation.gov notes that the well has been out of service, so bring all the water you need. RVs and trailers must fit on the parking spur, and driving or parking off road is not allowed at either campground.
Mines, hot springs and Mount Blue Sky
Gold mine tours
Clear Creek County's visitor site lists several mine tours close to town. The Argo Mill and Tunnel is a guided tour of the historic mill and tunnel entrance that ends with panning. Phoenix Gold Mine, which is family owned, offers an underground tour with panning included, and Capital Prize Gold Mine takes visitors more than 1,000 feet underground. Ore cart tracks mean strollers and wheelchairs are not allowed on some tours, so check with the operator first. A few miles west in Georgetown, the Lebanon Silver Mine tour pairs with a scenic train ride.
A soak in town
Indian Hot Springs, on Soda Creek Road, has geothermal caves and a mineral pool. Check its own site for hours and reservations before you go.
Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway
Denver Mountain Parks describes the Mount Blue Sky road as the highest paved road in North America. Vehicles need a timed-entry reservation from Recreation.gov, and tickets are not sold at the Welcome Station. As of October 5, 2026, the road (State Highway 5) was closed to vehicles for the rest of 2026. The byway climbs from forest up to alpine tundra. Consider leaving the RV at camp and making the drive in a smaller passenger vehicle.
Driving an RV from Denver to Idaho Springs
The route is I-70 west from the metro, climbing out of the foothills and into Clear Creek Canyon. Take exit 240 for town and Highway 103. Because Idaho Springs is east of the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel, you do not pass through the tunnel or over Loveland Pass to get here.
From September 1 through May 31, Colorado's Traction Law is in effect on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison, which includes this stretch. Passenger vehicles must have tires with at least 3/16 inch of tread rated all weather, mud and snow, or winter, or else carry chains or an approved alternative traction device. During severe storms CDOT can put the passenger vehicle chain law in place, which is the last step before closing the highway. Ask the RV owner what tires the rig has before you book a shoulder-season trip.
The return trip east is a long downhill toward the plains. Use lower gears instead of riding the brakes. Check COtrip.org for current road conditions, closures and construction before you leave.
Seasons, weather and freezing nights
Summer and early fall are the practical RV seasons here. The forest campgrounds on Highway 103 sit 2,000 to 3,000 feet above town, and nights at that elevation can get cold even in summer. The Mount Blue Sky road and its timed-entry season are limited to the warmer months.
Outside summer, freezing nights are the main RV concern. Water in fresh lines, tanks and the water heater can freeze and damage the plumbing. If you rent in spring or fall, ask the owner whether the RV is winterized, whether you can use the water system, and what they expect you to do on a cold night.
Worth knowing: Echo Lake and West Chicago Creek sit on the same highway but suit different rigs. The last mile to West Chicago Creek is one-lane gravel with two sharp switchbacks, while Echo Lake is reached on paved highway and lists parking spurs up to 55 feet. If you are towing or driving a longer motorhome, start with Echo Lake.
How RVRents fits an Idaho Springs trip
There are two ways to rent an RV for this trip, and they work differently. RVs from owners on Outdoorsy are booked and paid for on Outdoorsy and picked up from the owner. They do not include RVRents delivery, setup or other services. RVs booked directly with RVRents can add services à la carte. Delivery to a campsite near Idaho Springs is offered only on RVs marked Delivery available and is quoted case by case, because coverage centers on the Front Range and depends on the campground's rules and on whether a local provider serves the area. Setup, groceries, cleaning and activities are added the same way, only if you want them.
To book direct, send a trip request. Each service is a request until a provider confirms and you approve the price, and we check the campground's rules before any delivery is scheduled.
If, then
- If this is your first time driving an RV in the mountains, pick up in the metro and drive yourself to Echo Lake, where the access is paved.
- If you want to drive Mount Blue Sky, reserve the timed-entry ticket before you leave cell service and plan to use a smaller vehicle for the road itself.
- If your trip falls between September and May, confirm the RV's tires meet the Traction Law and check COtrip.org the morning you drive.
- If you have young kids, a mine tour with gold panning is an easy half day in town.
