Class A Diesel Pushers for Rent

The largest drivable motorhomes, with the engine in the rear.

A diesel pusher is a Class A motorhome with a diesel engine mounted at the rear, so it pushes the coach rather than pulling it. Class A motorhomes are the largest drivable RVs, built on a bus-style or commercial chassis with a wide windshield and the living area right behind the driver.

The rear engine keeps the cab quieter, and diesel torque helps on long mountain grades. Many are long enough that campground length limits matter, so check the site length before you book. Our campground pages list each park's details and links.

What a diesel pusher is

A Class A motorhome is built on a bus-style chassis with a flat front and a huge windshield. A diesel pusher puts the diesel engine in the rear, which keeps the cab quieter and usually brings air-leveling suspension, big storage bays and strong towing capacity.

Inside you will typically find residential-style kitchens, full bathrooms or a bath and a half, and multiple slide-outs that open into a large living space.

Driving one in the mountains

Diesel pushers have the torque for long climbs, and most have an exhaust brake or engine brake to help control speed on descents. Use it, and pick lower gears early on long downgrades.

These are long, heavy and tall vehicles. Plan fuel stops with room for a big rig, watch height clearances and give yourself extra stopping distance.

Bringing a car along

Many people tow a small car behind a Class A, called a toad, so they can leave the motorhome set up at camp. Ask the owner whether the motorhome has a tow hitch and what towing setup they allow.

Class A diesel pusher questions

Straight answers before you book. Always check the specific RV's weights and your vehicle's ratings.

Do I need a special license to drive a Class A motorhome?
Licensing rules vary by state and by vehicle weight. In many states a standard license covers most rental motorhomes, but check your state's rules and the specific RV's weight before you book.
What is the difference between a diesel pusher and a gas Class A?
A diesel pusher has a rear diesel engine, usually with more torque, an exhaust brake, air suspension and a quieter cab. Gas Class A motorhomes have the engine in front and are often lighter and less expensive.
Can I tow a car behind a Class A?
Many diesel pushers can tow a car. It takes the right hitch, a tow bar or dolly and a car that can be towed. Ask the owner what the motorhome is set up for.
How does a Class A handle wind?
Their height and flat sides catch crosswinds, so gusty days call for slower speeds and both hands on the wheel. Heavier diesel pushers tend to feel steadier than lighter gas models.
Can passengers move around while driving?
Everyone should be seated and belted in a seat with a seat belt while the motorhome is moving.
Can a Class A be delivered to my campsite?
Some RVs listed with RVRents are marked Delivery available or Delivery required. The listing says which.
