Texas is big enough that an RV trip here is really a choice between regions. RVRents does not deliver or set up RVs in Texas yet. This guide covers where people go, when, and what to plan for, and the box on this page links to RV rentals listed on Outdoorsy.

    Pick a region first

    RegionWhy people goPlan for
Hill Country (around Austin and San Antonio)Rivers, small towns, state parks, spring wildflowersBusy spring and holiday weekends; book state parks early
Gulf CoastBeaches, fishing, Padre Island National Seashore near Corpus ChristiHurricane season runs June 1 to November 30; wind and sand on beach sites
Big Bend and West TexasDesert mountains, dark skies, Big Bend National ParkLong distances between fuel and supplies; summer heat in the low desert
Rio Grande ValleyMild winters; a long tradition of "Winter Texans" staying for monthsMonthly rates at RV parks; summer heat

Heat is the main planning factor

Summer highs across much of Texas regularly pass 95 degrees, and RV air conditioners struggle in full sun. Look for shaded sites, check that your campground has 50-amp service if your RV needs it, and plan outdoor time for mornings. Spring and fall are the comfortable seasons for most of the state. Winter is peak season in the far south.

    Camping in Texas

Texas state parks take reservations through Texas Parks and Wildlife, and the popular ones in the Hill Country fill on spring weekends. At Padre Island National Seashore, parts of the beach allow primitive camping where you can drive on the sand; check current rules and tide conditions with the National Park Service before taking an RV onto the beach.

    If, then

    • If this is your first RV trip, start in the Hill Country, where drives are short and services are close.
    • If you want remote desert and dark skies, plan Big Bend for fall through spring and carry extra water.
    • If you are escaping winter, look at monthly stays in the Rio Grande Valley.
