Denver works as a first night for most Colorado RV trips. The airport is close, supplies are easy to find, and several campgrounds sit within an hour of downtown. It is also where RVRents has the most delivery and setup coverage.

Campgrounds within an hour of Denver

Two state parks carry most of the demand from Denver families. Chatfield State Park, southwest of the city near Littleton, has a large campground around a reservoir. Cherry Creek State Park in Aurora sits inside the metro area, which makes it handy for a first night after a late flight. Both book through Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and both fill on summer weekends.

Private RV parks around the metro add full hookups and laundry. Some sit next to highways, so check reviews for road noise before you book.

Things to do from a Denver base

    • Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre in Morrison, about 30 minutes west, for concerts or the trails around the rocks.
    • Golden, at the foot of the foothills, for a walkable downtown and creek path.
    • Day drives into the mountains on I-70 when the weather is clear.

Getting from the airport to your RV

Denver International Airport is about 25 miles from downtown and farther from most campgrounds. Guests who book delivery can go straight from the terminal to the campsite by rideshare or rental car, with the RV already parked, leveled and connected. Guests who pick up in person should allow time for the walkthrough, which usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.

    When to go

June through September brings the most open campgrounds and the warmest nights. May and October can be beautiful and quieter, but snow is possible and some higher campgrounds close. Winter RV trips around Denver are possible at parks that stay open, with a winterized rig and a plan for freezing nights.
