Ohio is an easy state to plan an RV trip around. Lake Erie runs along the north with beaches and island ferries, the hills of the southeast hide sandstone gorges and recess caves, and the middle of the state is dotted with reservoirs ringed by state park campgrounds. Many Ohio State Parks campgrounds offer electric or full-hookup sites, and one reservation system covers them all.
Up front: RVRents does not deliver, set up or service RVs in Ohio yet. You can rent today from RV owners listed on Outdoorsy, and you can join the waitlist for RVRents service in Ohio. This guide covers where to go, how state park reservations work and the Turnpike and ferry details that matter for an RV.
How Ohio Breaks Down for RV Travel
The Lake Erie shore stretches from Toledo past Sandusky and the islands to Geneva-on-the-Lake in the northeast. Northeast Ohio pairs Cleveland and Akron with Cuyahoga Valley National Park. North central Ohio has the Mohican area near Loudonville. Central Ohio is built around Columbus and its reservoirs. Southeast Ohio is the Hocking Hills, with gorges, cliffs and recess caves. Southwest Ohio covers Cincinnati and Dayton.
Top RV Destinations in Ohio
Hocking Hills
Hocking Hills State Park, near Logan, is built around short hikes to caves and waterfalls. Ash Cave is the largest recess cave in Ohio, nearly 700 feet wide, and its gorge trail is a quarter mile and wheelchair accessible. Old Man's Cave and Cedar Falls have trails of about a mile each. The state park campground sits next to Old Man's Cave and offers full-hookup, electric and non-electric sites on paved pads, with a year-round dump station.
Marblehead, Port Clinton and the Lake Erie Islands
This is Ohio's summer lake country. East Harbor State Park has the largest campground in the Ohio State Parks system, with 354 electric sites, 51 full hook-up sites and 168 non-electric sites, and a Lake Erie swimming beach a short drive or bike ride away. ODNR says reservations are required for all sites there.
Put-in-Bay and South Bass Island
You can take an RV to the islands. Miller Ferry states that cars, motorcycles, RVs and boats on trailers are welcome on its boats to Put-in-Bay and Middle Bass Island. Vehicles to Put-in-Bay go first come, first served, but the ferry requires proof of accommodation for weekend vehicle travel. South Bass Island State Park has full hookup and non-electric sites, has no walk-in sites, and takes reservations from May 1 through mid-October.
Cuyahoga Valley
Cuyahoga Valley National Park sits between Cleveland and Akron, with trails and waterfalls close to two big metro areas. The park has no campground, and the National Park Service says overnight RV parking is not allowed anywhere in the park. For daytime visits, oversized vehicle parking is available at specific lots, including Boston Mill Visitor Center, Station Road Bridge, Rockside Station and Wetmore Trailhead. The NPS lists West Branch State Park, about 26 miles away, among nearby campgrounds that take RVs.
Mohican and Loudonville
The Mohican area near Loudonville is a wooded base in north central Ohio. Mohican State Park's campground has electric, full hook-up and non-electric sites. ODNR notes that from mid-November through March 31 the full hook-up sites have no water at the site.
Columbus and Alum Creek
Alum Creek State Park, north of Columbus near Delaware, puts a large lake campground within reach of the capital. ODNR lists 286 electric sites, some overlooking the lake, and 37 full-service sites with electric, sewer and water. Electric sites have 20, 30 and 50 amp service, and the campground has a dump station and heated showers.
Geneva-on-the-Lake
Geneva State Park, in Ohio's northeast corner, gives you Lake Erie shoreline access from a campground with electric and full-service sites, including 20 premium full-service sites that overlook the lake. Water is not available in the off-season, November 1 to March 31.
Toledo and Maumee Bay
Maumee Bay State Park, in Oregon just east of Toledo, has full-hookup and electric sites and is open year-round. In winter the shower houses close, but two heated family restrooms with showers stay open. Five miles of paved trails connect most of the park's day-use areas.
| Region | Best months | Good base | Nearby park |

| Central Ohio | April to October | Columbus, Delaware | Alum Creek State Park |

Camping and Reservations
Ohio State Parks campsites are booked through ReserveOhio or by phone at (866) 644-6727. Under the ODNR reservation policy, campsites open 6 months to the day before arrival, so a June 1 arrival opens on December 1. Same-day campsite reservations are also allowed. Some campgrounds, including East Harbor and South Bass Island, require a reservation for every site.
Several state park campgrounds stay open in winter with reduced services, and ODNR keeps a winter camping list showing which ones. South Bass Island, for example, is closed from mid-October through April.
Driving an RV in Ohio
The Ohio Turnpike. The Turnpike, which crosses northern Ohio from Pennsylvania to Indiana, switched to a new toll system in April 2024. E-ZPass customers use open road tolling lanes without stopping. Drivers without E-ZPass take gated lanes and pay by cash or credit card at automated machines on exit. The Turnpike photographs plates in E-ZPass-only lanes and mails an unpaid toll invoice to vehicles without a valid transponder, so do not use those lanes without one. Cash and credit customers pay a higher rate than E-ZPass customers. Tolls are classed by axles and height, so an RV or a vehicle towing a trailer can fall in a higher class than a car. The Ohio Turnpike site has the current schedule of tolls and a fare calculator.
Ferries. Miller Ferry carries RVs to Put-in-Bay and Middle Bass Island. Middle Bass vehicle trips require a reservation, and the ferry notes it is not responsible for low-hanging exhaust or low ground clearance. Read the vehicle guidelines before you go.
Road conditions. The Ohio Department of Transportation posts traffic, construction and winter road conditions at OHGO.
Worth knowing: Taking an RV to Put-in-Bay on a weekend means you need proof of where you are staying before Miller Ferry will load the vehicle. Book South Bass Island State Park, which has no walk-in sites, before you head to the ferry.
Seasons and Weather
Summer is peak season on Lake Erie, and island campgrounds and ferries are busiest from June through Labor Day. Inland, spring and fall are comfortable for hiking, and October brings fall color to the Hocking Hills and Mohican area. Summer thunderstorms can roll in fast, so check the forecast before a ferry day. Winter brings lake-effect snow to the northeast, and many campgrounds shut off water from November into spring. Check weather.gov for current forecasts and alerts.
If, then
- If you want hiking to caves and waterfalls, base at the Hocking Hills State Park campground near Old Man's Cave.
- If you want a big Lake Erie campground with hookups, book East Harbor State Park.
- If you plan to visit Cuyahoga Valley National Park, camp outside the park, since overnight RV parking is not allowed inside it.
- If your RV has no E-ZPass, stay in the gated cash and credit lanes on the Ohio Turnpike.
- If you are camping in winter, check ODNR's winter camping list for which campgrounds still have water.
