Boulder sits at the base of the foothills about 25 miles northwest of downtown Denver, at an elevation the city lists as 5,430 feet. The Flatirons, the Chautauqua trails and Pearl Street are all a short drive apart, and US-36 continues north from town toward Lyons and Estes Park. What Boulder does not have is camping inside the city. RV trips here work best when you sleep at a campground outside town and drive in for the day.

Boulder is inside the Front Range area where RVRents delivers RVs booked directly with us, which makes it an easy start for a northern Colorado trip.

Boulder's camping and RV parking rules

The City of Boulder bars camping in parks, parkways, recreation areas, open space and other city property under section 5-6-10 of its code, and it requires the owner's permission to camp on other public or private land. The code defines camping as living or sleeping somewhere with shelter, and it counts any cover from the elements, other than clothing, as shelter. City Open Space and Mountain Parks rules also prohibit camping, with one small exception at the Fourth of July Trailhead that is not an RV campground. See the city's camping page and OSMP rules.

Street parking rules apply to campers and motor homes too. Before you leave an RV parked anywhere in town, check the current rules with the city's parking services.

Boulder County has a similar rule. Its regulations prohibit camping in all county Parks and Open Space areas except one: the Boulder County Fairgrounds campground in Longmont.

Where to camp with an RV near Boulder

    Boulder County Fairgrounds campground, Longmont

The fairgrounds campground at 9595 Nelson Road in Longmont is open year round for RVs and campers only. Tent and car camping are not allowed. Sites are first come, first served, and the county does not take reservations. Stays are limited to 14 days in a calendar year. Restrooms and showers are open to paid campers from March through October, water is seasonal, and gray and black water go to the dump station.

    St. Vrain State Park, Firestone

St. Vrain State Park is a Colorado Parks and Wildlife park east of Longmont, reached from I-25 Exit 240. It has 87 campsites around a set of ponds with 7 miles of nature trails, fishing and a boat ramp at Blue Heron Reservoir. Check the park page before you book: CPW has posted that the south campground access road is closed and full-hookup sites 42 through 87 are unavailable. Reservations go through cpwshop.com.

    Pawnee Campground, Brainard Lake

In summer, the Pawnee Campground in the Brainard Lake Recreation Area puts you in the Indian Peaks at about 10,400 feet. The Forest Service lists 47 sites for tents, trailers and RVs. The season is short, and the campground closes in mid-September. Campers parked at Pawnee do not need a Brainard Lake parking reservation for their site, but they do for parking elsewhere in the recreation area.

Driving and parking an RV in Boulder

From Denver, US-36 is the direct route to Boulder, and the drive takes about 30 to 40 minutes without traffic. From the Longmont and Firestone campgrounds, you drive southwest into town.

Downtown and the trailheads are where an RV gets awkward. At Chautauqua, the city charges for parking on weekends and summer holidays in the park's parking areas, along Baseline Road near the park and in the neighborhood to the north. Parking there is free on weekdays during the shuttle season and free in fall, winter and spring. In summer the city runs the free Park-to-Park shuttle to Chautauqua on weekends and holidays, with free shuttle parking in the downtown garages. In 2026 it ran from May 23 to September 7.

The practical plan for most RV guests: leave the RV at camp and come into town with a smaller vehicle, or park at the edge of downtown and take the shuttle in summer.

Worth knowing: The Boulder County Fairgrounds campground does not take reservations, and stays there are capped at 14 days per calendar year. On busy weekends, arrive early in the day, and have St. Vrain State Park or another reserved site as a backup.

Day trips from Boulder, including Rocky Mountain National Park

    • Hike from Chautauqua into the Flatirons on city Open Space and Mountain Parks trails.
    • Walk the Pearl Street Mall downtown after parking the RV.
    • Drive north on US-36 through Lyons to Estes Park. The National Park Service lists the Denver and Boulder route to Estes Park at about 66 miles and 1.5 to 2 hours.
    • Spend a summer day at Brainard Lake in the Indian Peaks, with a parking reservation if you are not camping at Pawnee.

For Rocky Mountain National Park, plan around timed entry. In 2026 the park required a reservation from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily from May 22 through October 12, and a separate Bear Lake Road reservation from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. from May 22 through October 18. Reservations are made only on Recreation.gov.

    Seasons and how RVRents fits

Summer has the most campground options, including Pawnee, but it is also the busiest time for Chautauqua and the national park. Spring and fall are quieter, with cold nights and a chance of snow, and the fairgrounds campground is the one that stays open all year. For mountain routes, check COtrip.org before you leave.

There are two ways to rent an RV for this trip, and they work differently. RVs from owners on Outdoorsy are booked and paid for on Outdoorsy and picked up from the owner. They do not include RVRents delivery, setup or other services. RVs booked directly with RVRents can add services Ă  la carte through vetted local providers: groceries, cleaning or activities, plus delivery and setup at your campsite near Boulder on RVs marked Delivery available. Some RVs require delivery and setup, and the listing says so.

To book direct, send a trip request. Each service is a request until a provider confirms and you approve the price, and we check the campground's rules before any delivery is scheduled.

    If, then

    • If you want a reserved site with easy highway access, book St. Vrain State Park.
    • If you are traveling outside summer, plan on the fairgrounds campground in Longmont.
    • If you want to hike Chautauqua on a summer weekend, park downtown and ride the free shuttle.
    • If you were hoping to sleep in the RV in town, plan on a campground instead. City code bars camping on city property.
