Loveland sits on I-25 about 50 miles north of downtown Denver, and for RV travelers its biggest draw is where US-34 goes next. Head west from town and the highway enters the Big Thompson Canyon and climbs to Estes Park, the east side gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. That makes Loveland a practical base for a trip that mixes a state park campground on the plains with day drives into the mountains.

Loveland is inside the Front Range area where RVRents delivers RVs booked directly with us, so you can start a trip here without first driving an unfamiliar rig through Denver.

Boyd Lake State Park on the east side of town

Boyd Lake State Park is run by Colorado Parks and Wildlife and sits on the northeast side of Loveland. Its campground is one of the easier ones on the Front Range to drive a big RV into. CPW lists 140 paved pull-through sites equipped for vehicles up to 40 feet, with 20, 30 and 50 amp electric hookups, picnic tables and grills. Three restroom buildings have showers, and there is a dump station.

The campground stays open in winter. From November 1 through March 31, CPW keeps only the A loop and the A/B loop bathroom open, and laundry is closed. Reservations open up to six months ahead at cpwshop.com or by phone at 1-800-244-5613.

Check the park page for current lake conditions before you plan a water day. For 2026, CPW closed the lake to boating because of low water and closed the marina for the season. Swimming and hand-launched craft such as kayaks and paddleboards were still allowed.

Carter Lake, in the foothills southwest of town

Carter Lake is a Larimer County park at about 5,760 feet, southwest of Loveland and northwest of Berthoud. It is open year round and requires entrance and camping permits. The county's automated pay stations take only credit and debit cards.

The lake has several campgrounds, including Eagle, Big Thompson, Carter Knolls, Lowell's, North Pines, South Shore and the recently opened Sky View. For RV campers, the difference that matters is power. On the county's booking site, South Shore and Eagle list 50 amp electric sites without water or sewer hookups, while Carter Knolls and North Pines have no electricity. Book through larimercamping.com.

Driving US-34 through the Big Thompson Canyon

US-34 runs west from Loveland through the Big Thompson Canyon to Estes Park. The highway was rebuilt after the 2013 flood, and CDOT reopened the canyon in 2018. The National Park Service notes that the road is open to all traffic and that drivers may still meet short construction delays.

The canyon road is narrow and winding, with rock walls on one side and the river on the other. In an RV, keep your speed down, stay well inside your lane on curves and use pullouts when traffic stacks up behind you. Check COtrip.org before you leave for closures, roadwork and weather.

Before the canyon, Devil's Backbone Open Space sits just west of Loveland off US-34. Turn north on Hidden Valley Drive just past mile marker 88. It has 17.25 miles of trail that connect to Rimrock and Horsetooth Mountain open spaces. The county says the lot is popular and suggests arriving before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m.

Rocky Mountain National Park from a Loveland base

Estes Park is the east side gateway town for Rocky Mountain National Park, and most Loveland campers visit as a day trip. Plan around the park's timed entry system. In 2026 the park required a timed entry reservation from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily from May 22 through October 12, and a separate Timed Entry+ Bear Lake Road reservation from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. from May 22 through October 18. Reservations are made only on Recreation.gov, and a park entrance pass is also required. Check the park's timed entry page for current dates.

The Bear Lake Road corridor, which includes Moraine Park, Sprague Lake and the Bear Lake trailheads, needs its own reservation. If you have a smaller vehicle along, it is usually easier to park at busy trailheads than a motorhome.

Worth knowing: CPW lists a 14 foot 2 inch clearance at the Boyd Lake entry gate. Check the listed height of your RV, including any roof air conditioner, before you arrive.

Things to do in town, and how RVRents fits

    • Walk the Benson Sculpture Garden, a free city park with more than 170 outdoor works. It hosts the Sculpture in the Park show each August.
    • Paddle or swim at Boyd Lake when conditions allow.
    • Hike Devil's Backbone in the morning, then drive the canyon to Estes Park.

Summer is the busiest time for campsites and for the park, so book early. Spring and fall bring quieter campgrounds, but nights can be cold and canyon weather can change quickly.

There are two ways to rent an RV for this trip, and they work differently. RVs from owners on Outdoorsy are booked and paid for on Outdoorsy and picked up from the owner. They do not include RVRents delivery, setup or other services. RVs booked directly with RVRents can add services Ă  la carte through vetted local providers: groceries, cleaning or activities, plus delivery and setup at your campsite near Loveland on RVs marked Delivery available. Some RVs require delivery and setup, and the listing says so.

To book direct, send a trip request. Each service is a request until a provider confirms and you approve the price, and we check the campground's rules before any delivery is scheduled.

    If, then

    • If you are driving a large motorhome, start with Boyd Lake's paved pull-through sites.
    • If you plan to visit Rocky Mountain National Park in summer, book timed entry on Recreation.gov before you leave home.
    • If you need power for a CPAP or heater, book South Shore or Eagle at Carter Lake, not North Pines.
    • If you want a winter trip, Boyd Lake's A loop is the one to book.
