Estes Park sits at the east entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, at about 7,522 feet, and most RV trips here are really park trips. The town has fuel, groceries and restaurants, and the park's campgrounds start a few minutes up the road. Visit Estes Park describes the town as about 90 minutes from Denver, and the main routes cross no high mountain passes, which makes it one of the easier mountain bases to reach in a rented RV.

The catch is planning. The park's campgrounds book up, and the park runs a timed entry system for much of the year. Sort out your campsite first and most of the rest falls into place.

Rocky Mountain National Park campgrounds that take RVs

The National Park Service lists four campgrounds in the park that accept RVs and trailers, each with its own length limit. A fifth, Longs Peak, is tents only. Summer reservations are required at all four RV campgrounds and are made through Recreation.gov, online, in the app or by phone. Bookings open six months ahead, and the park says you cannot reserve in person at a campground or visitor center.

CampgroundRV or trailer limitHookups (per NPS)Timed entry included
Moraine Park40 feetElectric only, in Loops B and C. No water hookups.Yes, including Bear Lake Road
Glacier Basin35 feetNone listedYes, including Bear Lake Road
Aspenglen30 feetNone listedYes, including Bear Lake Road
Timber Creek (west side)30 feetNone listedYes, but not Bear Lake Road

Moraine Park is the only campground in the park that stays open in winter, roughly from October 19 to mid-May. Winter sites there are first come, first served, and firewood and ice are not sold. The park's own camping page gives conflicting information on whether the dump station and fresh water fill run in winter, so call ahead if you are counting on them. The park has listed 2027 opening dates as "to be determined" and says to check back in mid-November.

Timber Creek sits on the park's west side, on the far side of Trail Ridge Road from Estes Park. It only works as an Estes Park base when Trail Ridge Road is open.

Before you book, compare your rig's length with the limits above. A 30-foot travel trailer plus tow vehicle is a different question from a 30-foot motorhome, so check how Recreation.gov measures length for the site you want.

How timed entry works when you arrive in an RV

For 2026, the park required a timed entry reservation from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, May 22 through October 12. A separate option called Timed Entry+ covers the Bear Lake Road corridor, including Moraine Park, Sprague Lake and Bear Lake, from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, May 22 through October 18. Outside those hours you can enter without a reservation, but you still need a park entrance pass.

    • Reservations use two-hour entry windows. Once inside, you can stay as long as you like.
    • One reservation covers one vehicle per day, and the reservation holder has to be in that vehicle.
    • Reservations guarantee entry, not parking at a specific trailhead.
    • Most reservations release on the first of each month at 8 a.m. Mountain time. About 40 percent of each day's reservations release at 7 p.m. the evening before.
Worth knowing: A campground reservation at Moraine Park, Glacier Basin or Aspenglen counts as your timed entry, including Bear Lake Road, and campers can enter from 1 p.m. on the first day of their stay. Timber Creek includes timed entry but not Bear Lake Road, and Longs Peak includes none. If you land an RV site at one of the three east-side campgrounds, you can skip the monthly scramble for entry permits.

Rules and dates change from year to year. Confirm the current system on the park's timed entry page before you plan around it.

Driving an RV to Estes Park and over Trail Ridge Road

From Denver, the common route runs north on US 36 through Boulder and Lyons, then up the canyon into Estes Park. Visit Estes Park lists the Lyons route at about 76 miles. The road climbs steadily and winds along the river, so allow extra time in a large rig and use pullouts to let traffic pass.

Trail Ridge Road (US 34) crosses the park and tops out at 12,183 feet. It is not maintained in winter. The park says it normally closes in mid-October and opens to through travel during the last week of May, weather permitting, and it can close temporarily in fall before the seasonal closure. For the 2025 to 2026 season it closed to through travel on November 14, 2025. Check road status with the park before you plan a crossing.

The Colorado Department of Transportation can put traction and chain laws into effect on any state highway when conditions call for it. Shoulder season trips should start with a look at COtrip.org for current conditions and closures.

Seasons and weather around Estes Park

Summer is the full-service season. All four RV campgrounds operate, Trail Ridge Road is usually open, and timed entry is in effect. It is also the busiest time, so reserve early.

Fall brings quieter campgrounds after the early October timed entry dates end, but Trail Ridge Road can close with little notice and the summer campgrounds shut down for the year. From late October, Moraine Park is the only campground left open in the park.

Winter RV camping is possible at Moraine Park for self-sufficient campers. The park says Bear Lake Road and Moraine Park typically stay open in winter, and visitors snowshoe and ski in those areas. Plan for freezing nights, limited services and a rig that is ready for cold.

Visit Estes Park notes that the town runs a seasonal free shuttle. Parking an RV at busy trailheads is often harder than parking a car, so a shuttle can save a lot of circling.

How RVRents fits an Estes Park trip

There are two ways to rent an RV for this trip, and they work differently. RVs from owners on Outdoorsy are booked and paid for on Outdoorsy and picked up from the owner. They do not include RVRents delivery, setup or other services. RVs booked directly with RVRents can add services à la carte. Delivery to a campsite near Estes Park is offered only on RVs marked Delivery available and is quoted case by case, because coverage centers on the Front Range and depends on the campground's rules and on whether a local provider serves the area. Setup, groceries, cleaning and activities are added the same way, only if you want them.

To book direct, send a trip request. Each service is a request until a provider confirms and you approve the price, and we check the campground's rules before any delivery is scheduled.

    If, then

    • If your rig is longer than 35 feet, Moraine Park is the only park campground that lists a limit long enough.
    • If you want electric hookups inside the park, look at Moraine Park Loops B and C.
    • If you are visiting after mid-October, plan on Moraine Park and expect Trail Ridge Road to be closed.
    • If you could not get a campsite, book timed entry when the monthly release opens or try the 7 p.m. release the night before.

Campgrounds and RV parks to look at

Listing a campground here does not mean RVRents has an agreement with it, unless it carries the partner badge.

    • Moraine Park Campground

NPS lists a 40-foot RV limit, with electric sites only in Loops B and C, and it is the park's only winter campground.

    • Glacier Basin Campground

NPS lists a 35-foot RV limit and requires summer reservations through Recreation.gov.

    • Aspenglen Campground

NPS lists a 30-foot RV limit, and reservations include timed entry with Bear Lake Road access.

    • Timber Creek Campground

A west-side park campground with a 30-foot RV limit whose reservation includes timed entry but not Bear Lake Road.
