Steamboat Springs sits in the Yampa Valley in northwest Colorado, with downtown at about 6,695 feet according to the Steamboat Springs Chamber. People base RV trips here for two state park reservoirs within about 30 miles of town, hot springs in and near downtown, and national forest trails that start a few miles from Main Street. It is a longer drive than the Front Range towns, about 160 miles from Denver, and the last stretch crosses Rabbit Ears Pass.
The drive from Denver over Rabbit Ears Pass
The Chamber's route runs west on I-70 through the Eisenhower Tunnel to the Silverthorne exit, north on Colorado 9 to Kremmling, then west on US 40 over Rabbit Ears Pass into Steamboat. Plan on roughly three hours or more in good conditions, longer in a large RV that climbs slowly on grades.
Every leg of that route is mountain driving. I-70 west of Denver climbs to the tunnel, and US 40 climbs again over Rabbit Ears before dropping into the valley. CDOT's Traction Law is in effect on I-70 from Morrison to Dotsero between September 1 and May 31, and CDOT can put traction or chain laws into effect on any state highway when conditions call for it. Mountain passes can close in storms. Check COtrip.org for current conditions before you leave, and again before you head home.
Stagecoach and Steamboat Lake: the two state parks near town
Colorado Parks and Wildlife runs two state parks that work well as Steamboat bases. The Chamber puts Stagecoach about 17 miles south of town and Steamboat Lake about 27 miles north. Both take reservations through CPW's online system at cpwshop.com, up to six months ahead.
| Stagecoach State Park | Steamboat Lake State Park | |
|---|---|---|
| Direction from town | About 17 miles south | About 27 miles north, via County Road 129 |
| Campgrounds | Four campgrounds | Dutch Hill Campground, with electric and non-electric loops |
| Hookups | Electric hookups available | Electric sites available. CPW says full hookups are not provided. |
| Main reservation season | May 15 to September 30 | Friday before Memorial Day to September 30 |
| Winter camping | A few electric sites at Pinnacle campground | Eight electric sites in the marina parking lot, self-contained campers only |
Stagecoach sits around a reservoir south of town. CPW says RVs are welcome but limits each site to one hard-sided RV, trailer or sprinter van plus one tent, or two tents. Water, showers and the dump station are summer only. CPW lists the dump station and water as closed from October 31 through May 15.
Steamboat Lake sits at about 8,000 feet in the Willow Creek Valley of the Park Range, so nights run colder than in town. CPW lists water fill stations and a dump station for the main season. In winter, the marina lot sites are reservation only and CPW says services and amenities are not available, so arrive with full fresh water and empty tanks. The lake closes to motorized boating on November 1.
Both parks limit stays to 14 days in any 28-day period, with check-in at 1 p.m. and check-out at noon.
Hot springs and trails near Steamboat Springs
Old Town Hot Springs
Old Town Hot Springs is a nonprofit health and wellness center in downtown Steamboat at 136 Lincoln Avenue. Its mineral pools are fed by the Heart Spring, and the center also has water slides, a gym and a climbing wall. The center says pool visits do not require reservations.
Strawberry Park Hot Springs
Strawberry Park Hot Springs is about 7 miles from downtown, but do not drive the RV there. The springs say no trailers or RVs are allowed, reservations are required for all pool visits, and Uber and Lyft passengers are not admitted. From November 1 to May 1, the springs say Routt County requires 4WD vehicles with winter tires to reach them. Minors are not allowed after dark. Leave the rig at camp and get there in a separate vehicle or by the shuttle the springs mention.
Fish Creek Falls
The Forest Service lists Fish Creek Falls about 3 miles east of Steamboat on Fish Creek Road, with two parking lots. The lower lot is the one the Forest Service designates for overnight and horse trailer parking. Check with the Forest Service office in Steamboat for current fees and lot rules before you go.
Seasons and weather in the Yampa Valley
Summer is the main RV season. The Chamber lists July as the warmest month, with an average high of 82 degrees and an average low of 41. Those cool nights are worth planning for: bring layers and a sleeping setup rated for the 30s and 40s, even in midsummer, especially at Steamboat Lake's higher elevation.
Fall is short. By October, state park water and dump stations start to shut down, and from November 1 the winter rules apply at both parks. Winter is cold. The Chamber says temperatures can drop to 30 below zero, and winter RV camping here is for well-prepared, self-contained campers with a rig rated for that kind of cold.
Worth knowing: Steamboat Lake's winter electric sites in the marina lot became reservation only starting November 1, 2026, and CPW says there are no services or amenities in winter. Fill fresh water and dump tanks before you drive up County Road 129, because the nearest services may be back in town.
How RVRents fits a Steamboat trip
There are two ways to rent an RV for this trip, and they work differently. RVs from owners on Outdoorsy are booked and paid for on Outdoorsy and picked up from the owner. They do not include RVRents delivery, setup or other services. RVs booked directly with RVRents can add services Ă la carte. Delivery to a campsite near Steamboat Springs is offered only on RVs marked Delivery available and is quoted case by case, because coverage centers on the Front Range and depends on the campground's rules and on whether a local provider serves the area. Setup, groceries, cleaning and activities are added the same way, only if you want them.
To book direct, send a trip request. Each service is a request until a provider confirms and you approve the price, and we check the campground's rules before any delivery is scheduled.
If, then
- If you want to be closer to town and the highway, look at Stagecoach to the south.
- If you want cooler nights and a lake at about 8,000 feet, look at Steamboat Lake to the north.
- If you plan to visit Strawberry Park Hot Springs, bring or arrange a separate vehicle, since RVs and trailers are not allowed.
- If you are traveling between September and May, check COtrip.org for Rabbit Ears Pass and the I-70 Traction Law before every drive.
