Salida sits in the Arkansas River Valley on the eastern slope of the Continental Divide, at 7,083 feet according to the city. It has been the Chaffee County seat since 1928, and the Arkansas River runs right through downtown. RV travelers base here for river campgrounds a few minutes from town, a city-run indoor hot springs pool, and easy day drives to Monarch Pass and Browns Canyon.
Salida sits south of Buena Vista in the same valley, so many trips combine the two. Salida puts you closer to the southern river campgrounds and to US 50.
Driving to Salida: Kenosha, Trout Creek and the Monarch Pass side trip
The usual route from Denver follows US 285 southwest over Kenosha Pass, across South Park and over Trout Creek Pass into the Arkansas valley. From there, US 285 runs south past Buena Vista to Poncha Springs, and US 50 leads a few miles east into Salida. Plan on about three hours in good conditions, and more in a large RV.
A second option uses I-25 south toward Colorado Springs or Pueblo and then US 50 west up the Arkansas. Which route works better depends on where you pick up the RV and on the weather.
West of Salida, US 50 climbs to Monarch Pass on the Continental Divide. That road is a common day drive from Salida and the way to Gunnison and the western slope. South of Poncha Springs, US 285 climbs Poncha Pass, at about 9,010 feet, toward the San Luis Valley. All of these are steep mountain grades. Use lower gears on descents, and check COtrip.org for closures and chain or traction law notices before you cross. CDOT can activate those laws on any state highway.
Campgrounds near Salida
Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area
Colorado Parks and Wildlife runs the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area along the river. Its developed campgrounds near Salida include Salida East, Point Barr and Rincon, with Vallie Bridge and Five Points farther downstream. CPW describes these as basic campsites. Salida East also has an off-grid yurt that CPW describes as just minutes from town.
CPW says camping at all developed Arkansas Headwaters campgrounds is by reservation only, and reservations can be made on the day of arrival or up to six months ahead. Yurt reservations go through the recreation area office by phone. Dispersed camping is allowed outside developed areas along the river if you bring a portable toilet and a fire container, with a 14-day limit in any 28-day period. Rock fire rings are not allowed.
Monarch Park Campground
Monarch Park is a Forest Service campground a short drive north of Monarch Pass. From Poncha Springs, head west on US 50 about 15 miles, then turn south on County Road 231. It sits at about 10,500 feet. Recreation.gov says each site includes two vehicles or one RV, vehicles must fit on the parking spur, there are no RV hookups, and dumping wastewater is not allowed.
The campground was closed for renovation and was set to reopen on August 21, 2026. Recreation.gov also noted that the water hand pump was under repair, so campers had to bring all their water. Check the listing for current status before you go.
| If you want | Camp at | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| To be close to downtown and the hot springs pool | Salida East or another Arkansas Headwaters campground near town | Basic sites, reservation only |
| Cool nights in the forest | Monarch Park Campground, about 10,500 feet | No hookups, no wastewater dumping, a steep highway to reach it |
| Quiet river sites farther out | Vallie Bridge or Five Points, downstream | Longer drive to town for supplies |
Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center and Browns Canyon
The Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center is run by the City of Salida at 410 West Rainbow Boulevard. The city describes it as one of the largest indoor hot springs pools in the country. Its water comes from springs the city owns in nearby Poncha Springs. The center closed temporarily in summer 2026 for maintenance and was scheduled to reopen in late July, and the city posts current hours on its website and social media. Check before you plan a soak.
Browns Canyon National Monument lies upriver from Salida. Designated in 2015, it covers the Arkansas River corridor between Salida and Buena Vista and is managed jointly by the Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service. CPW manages river recreation through the canyon as part of the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area. Rafting through Browns Canyon is a popular trip from Salida. Go with a licensed outfitter and leave the RV parked at camp.
Seasons and weather in Salida
Summer is the busiest RV season, with the river campgrounds in full use and the Forest Service campgrounds open at higher elevations. Plan outdoor time for the morning, since afternoon thunderstorms are common in the Colorado mountains in summer.
Spring and fall bring fewer crowds, but nights are cold at this elevation and Monarch Pass can see snow early and late in the season. Higher Forest Service campgrounds have shorter seasons, so check each listing for open dates. Winter RV camping is for experienced, self-contained campers, and passes on every route in and out of Salida can be affected by storms.
Worth knowing: Monarch Park does not allow wastewater dumping and has no hookups. Dump tanks and fill fresh water in the valley before you drive up US 50, and confirm the water pump status on Recreation.gov, since it was out of service in 2026.
How RVRents fits a Salida trip
There are two ways to rent an RV for this trip, and they work differently. RVs from owners on Outdoorsy are booked and paid for on Outdoorsy and picked up from the owner. They do not include RVRents delivery, setup or other services. RVs booked directly with RVRents can add services Ă la carte. Delivery to a campsite near Salida is offered only on RVs marked Delivery available and is quoted case by case, because coverage centers on the Front Range and depends on the campground's rules and on whether a local provider serves the area. Setup, groceries, cleaning and activities are added the same way, only if you want them.
To book direct, send a trip request. Each service is a request until a provider confirms and you approve the price, and we check the campground's rules before any delivery is scheduled.
If, then
- If you want the shortest drive to downtown and the hot springs pool, book an Arkansas Headwaters campground near town.
- If you are coming from Colorado Springs, compare the US 50 route with US 285 before you pick up the RV.
- If you plan to camp at Monarch Park, bring all the water you need and arrive with empty tanks.
- If you are also visiting Buena Vista, split the trip and camp a few nights in each part of the valley.
