Thornton is the north end of the Denver metro, stretching along I-25 across Adams and Weld counties. For an RV trip its value is position. The city sits between two large wildlife areas, Barr Lake State Park and the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, and a short run up I-25 reaches St. Vrain State Park, a year-round campground with hookups. Downtown Denver is about 20 to 25 minutes south on I-25 in normal traffic.

Thornton is a practical choice if you are picking up an RV in the north metro, heading toward northern Colorado, or planning a trip built around birds, bison and easy flat driving rather than mountain passes. The city's elevation is listed at 5,210 feet.

Where to camp from a Thornton base

Barr Lake State Park, the closest state park to Thornton, has no campsites according to CPW, so the practical campgrounds for a Thornton trip are north and southwest of the city.

    St. Vrain State Park

St. Vrain State Park is at 3785 Weld County Road 24 1/2 in Firestone. From I-25, take exit 240 onto Colorado 119 west, go north on County Road 7 until it becomes County Road 24 1/2, and turn into the park. CPW lists 87 campsites across eight campgrounds along the ponds, with electric and full hookup sites plus tent camping.

    • Camping is available year-round, though some water hydrants may be shut off in winter.
    • A reservation is required, through cpwshop.com or by phone, up to six months ahead.
    • A dump station is on site. Stays are limited to 14 days in a 28-day period.
    • CPW reported in fall 2026 that the south campground road was closed for paving, making full hookup sites 42 to 87 unavailable. Check the park page before you book.

The park has about 7 miles of trails, stocked fishing ponds, a boat ramp on Blue Heron Reservoir and views of Longs Peak.

    Standley Lake Regional Park

Southwest of Thornton in Westminster, Standley Lake runs a city campground from May 1 to September 30. It takes RVs and trailers, but only three sites have electric hookups and there is no dump station at the lake.

Barr Lake State Park for birding

Barr Lake State Park is at 13401 Picadilly Road near Brighton, a short drive east of Thornton. CPW's directions from Denver use I-76 to exit 22 (Bromley Lane), then east to Piccadilly Road and south to the entrance. The park is open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the nature center near the south parking lot is open Tuesday through Sunday.

CPW lists more than 370 bird species here and 21 miles of trails. An easy 1.3-mile walk from the nature center leads to the Gazebo Boardwalk, where a spotting scope looks out over the rookery. Deer, coyote and red fox also show up.

Conditions here change with water levels. CPW closed the reservoir to all boating for the rest of the 2026 season, paddleboards included, because of low water, and posted a toxic algae alert advising visitors and pets to avoid contact with the water. Part of the Lake Loop trail is also closed on weekdays during a multiyear dam rehabilitation project. Check the park's alerts before each visit.

    Bison at Rocky Mountain Arsenal

The Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge covers about 15,000 acres at 6550 Gateway Road in Commerce City, south of Thornton. Visiting is free. The 11-mile Wildlife Drive passes through bison range, and visitors must stay in their vehicles when viewing bison. The visitor center is open Wednesday through Sunday, and refuge hours run sunrise to sunset for most of the year, with later summer hours from May 1 to August 1. FWS does not list vehicle size limits for the drive on its main page, so call the visitor center before taking a large RV on it.

Worth knowing: The refuge's Wildlife Drive is a slow, stay-in-your-vehicle route, which suits an RV with big windows. FWS closed the drive at mile marker 2 from November 1 to 4 in 2026 for bison management, and similar short closures can happen, so check the refuge page the day you go.

    If, then

    • If you have young kids, do the Arsenal's Wildlife Drive in the morning, when they can watch from their seats.
    • If you travel with a dog, keep it away from Barr Lake's water while the algae alert is posted.
    • If you are visiting in winter, base at St. Vrain, which is open year-round.
    • If you want a short walk close to home, try the loops at Thornton's Carpenter Park, which run from 0.7 to 2 miles.

Roads and seasons on Thornton's north plains

    Getting around in an RV

I-25 is the main north-south route, I-76 runs along the southeast edge toward Barr Lake, and E-470 meets I-25 on the north side. E-470 is a cashless toll road that photographs plates and bills the registered owner, so ask the RV owner how tolls are handled before you use it. Thornton's terrain is flat, which keeps the driving simple, but I-25 through the north metro is heavily traveled, so give yourself extra following distance in a large rig.

The Carpenter Park trail map from the city shows four walking loops around the pond and recreation center. For highway conditions, use COtrip.org.

    Weather by season

Spring and fall bring milder temperatures for long walks at Barr Lake and on the Arsenal's trails. Summer is warm, with afternoon thunderstorms that can build fast over open country, and the Arsenal adds evening hours from May through July. Winter is cold and windy on the plains, but St. Vrain stays open and the Arsenal keeps sunrise to sunset hours. Snow on I-25 can slow trips north, so check COtrip before driving to camp.

How RVRents fits a Thornton trip

There are two ways to rent an RV for this trip, and they work differently. RVs from owners on Outdoorsy are booked and paid for on Outdoorsy and picked up from the owner. They do not include RVRents delivery, setup or other services. RVs booked directly with RVRents can add services à la carte through vetted local providers: groceries, cleaning or activities, plus delivery and setup at your campsite near Thornton on RVs marked Delivery available. Some RVs require delivery and setup, and the listing says so.

To book direct, send a trip request. Each service is a request until a provider confirms and you approve the price, and we check the campground's rules before any delivery is scheduled.

Is St. Vrain State Park open in winter?
CPW says camping is available year-round, though some water hydrants may be shut off in winter. Reservations are required.
