Westminster sits on US 36 between Denver and Boulder, and its draw for RV travelers is Standley Lake Regional Park, a city-run lake with a summer campground on the west side of town. From the campground you can paddle at sunrise, ride a long paved trail across the city, and still be about 20 to 25 minutes from downtown Denver in normal traffic.
Westminster makes sense for a short summer trip, a weekend split between the lake and the Butterfly Pavilion, or a first night in an RV before heading north or into the mountains. It is also a place where knowing the local rules ahead of time saves real hassle, because Standley Lake runs on its own pass system and its own camping calendar.
Camping at Standley Lake Regional Park
The City of Westminster runs the Standley Lake campground, which has 66 reservable campsites plus six bell tents. The main campground takes RVs, camp trailers and tents. The park entrance is at West 100th Avenue and Simms Street.
This is mostly dry camping. Only three sites have electric hookups (sites 52, 53 and accessible site 16, which the city says is not recommended for large trailers), and there is no dump station at the lake. Other details from the city:
- Public camping runs May 1 through September 30. No camping is allowed October 1 through April 30.
- Reservations open in January through the city's WebTrac system. Same-day sites are first come, first served, and in-person requests must be made before 8 p.m.
- Main gates close at 10 p.m. If you will arrive later, call the gatehouse before 10 p.m.
- Standley Lake is a no-alcohol park, and glass bottles are prohibited.
- Generators may not exceed 60 decibels. Quiet hours run 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- Stays are limited to 14 days, and each site allows one camping unit and two tents. Extra vehicles go to overflow parking.
- A reservation includes a daily parks pass for one vehicle, displayed on the dashboard.
On and around the water
Swimming and wading are not allowed at Standley Lake, so plan on paddling, fishing and wildlife watching. Campers and bell tent guests get personal paddle craft use during their stay. Every boat, board and tube must enter through the main entrance and be sprayed under the city's aquatic nuisance species rules before it can launch. Pets are welcome on a leash but are not allowed in the water.
The park's FAQ places the eagles and their nest in the far northwest corner of the park, and the city streams a Bird Island camera. The Standley Lake Nature Center keeps longer hours in summer (7 a.m. to 5 p.m.) than in winter. Anglers 16 and older need a Colorado fishing license, live and frozen bait are prohibited, and ice fishing is not allowed.
More of Westminster: trails and the Butterfly Pavilion
Big Dry Creek Trail
The city's Big Dry Creek Trail runs nearly 12 miles from Standley Lake Regional Park east to I-25 and on into Thornton. It has been a designated National Recreation Trail since 2003. If you bring bikes, you can ride from camp without loading anything back into the rig.
Butterfly Pavilion
The Butterfly Pavilion at 6252 West 104th Avenue is a nonprofit invertebrate center off US 36. Exhibits include Wings of the Tropics, outdoor gardens and a new nature play area for kids. It is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with timed entry, which makes it a good choice for a hot afternoon or a rainy day.
Worth knowing: Standley Lake has no dump station, but the City of Westminster accepts RV wastewater for a fee at the Big Dry Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility, 13150 Huron Street. Plan to arrive with empty tanks and stop there on your way out. Also note that Colorado State Parks passes are not valid at Standley Lake, which uses its own city pass.
Standley Lake or a state park with hookups
| Campground | Distance from Westminster | Hookups | Season | Pick it if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standley Lake Regional Park | In town | Electric at 3 sites only, no dump station | May 1 to September 30 | You want a lake inside the city and can dry camp |
| St. Vrain State Park, Firestone | About 30 minutes north via I-25 | Electric and full hookup sites | Year-round | You need power or sewer, or are visiting outside summer |
St. Vrain State Park is off I-25 at exit 240 and has 87 campsites around a string of ponds, with reservations required through CPW. CPW reported that the south campground road was closed for paving in fall 2026, which took full hookup sites 42 to 87 offline, so check current status before you book.
If, then
- If you want kids to see eagles, pull up the city's Bird Island camera before you go and pack binoculars for the lake.
- If you need air conditioning on a hot night, book one of the three electric sites early or look at St. Vrain.
- If you have a rainy afternoon, spend it at the Butterfly Pavilion.
Driving, parking and timing a Westminster trip
Roads and park parking rules
US 36 and I-25 are the main routes, with wide arterials such as Wadsworth Parkway, Sheridan Boulevard and 104th Avenue connecting them. Standley Lake's park rules say vehicles may only park in designated areas, shoreline parking is not allowed, and vehicles may not stay in park lots between 11 p.m. and sunrise unless an exception applies, such as a campsite. The drive-in gate opens earlier and closes later in summer than in winter, when it closes an hour before sunset.
If you are continuing to the mountains, US 36 leads to Boulder and I-70 is reached through the west metro. Check COtrip.org for closures and traction law updates before any mountain drive.
When to go
The camping calendar decides this one. Standley Lake's campground runs May through September, so summer is the season for a lake-based stay. Expect warm days and afternoon thunderstorms, and get off the water when storms build. In the off season, the trails, the Butterfly Pavilion and day visits to the lake still work, but you will need a campground such as St. Vrain for overnight stays.
How RVRents fits a Westminster trip
There are two ways to rent an RV for this trip, and they work differently. RVs from owners on Outdoorsy are booked and paid for on Outdoorsy and picked up from the owner. They do not include RVRents delivery, setup or other services. RVs booked directly with RVRents can add services à la carte through vetted local providers: groceries, cleaning or activities, plus delivery and setup at your campsite near Westminster on RVs marked Delivery available. Some RVs require delivery and setup, and the listing says so.
To book direct, send a trip request. Each service is a request until a provider confirms and you approve the price, and we check the campground's rules before any delivery is scheduled.
